Life is too busy, and if we encounter some body pain it reduces our efficiency. In this modern age, the hustle and bustle of life does not permit us to take a break. We have to stay fit and strong 24/7. Body pain can reduce our efficiency significantly hence we need some medicine to suppress the pain. We just need enough to make it through the day, without any hindrances in work. Mesulid is one such drug. Its fast action has made it popular over the decades. It is used for the treatment of arthritis, body pain, dental pain, inflammation and dysmenorrhea.

Mesulid has an active ingredient called nimesulide, which was developed by Helsinn Healthcare SA, Switzerland. It is one of the oldest among the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory class of drugs and was launched in 1985 in Italy. It has become very popular among the NSAIDs, and is available in more than 50 countries across the globe. It has the properties of a pain killer, anti-pyretic agent (an agent which reduces body temperature in fever) and an anti-inflammatory agent (an agent which reduces swelling).

In the human body there exists an enzyme called Cyclo-oxygenase, which is accountable for the production of a substance called prostaglandin. Prostaglandin is a fatty acid that stimulates pain in nerve cells, during inflammation, due to a disease or injury. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) work by inhibiting Cyclo-oxygenase. There are two isoforms of Cyclo-oxygenase, namely Cyclo-oxygenase-1 and Cyclo-oxygenase-2. The former is essential for the smooth running and maintenance of the kidney, cardiovascular, and intestinal functions, whereas the latter is responsible for stimulation of pain in nerve cells. Clinical data obtained by different studies indicate that Mesulid effects only Cyclo-oxygenase-2 also called COX-II. Hence it is a COX-II selective NSAID.

As Mesulid does not affect COX-I, it has limited adverse effects on kidney, heart and vascular functions. It also prevents tissue damage that occurs during inflammation, and thus cures inflammation faster. Mesulid has a superior design, therefore it is more effective and has less side effects than other NSAIDs. Mesulid is aimed for people of ages 12 and above. It is inadvisable to use it with children under 12 years of age. The effective dosage ranges from 100mg to 200mg a day – however, the minimum dosage should be applied.

Mesulid has shown to be hepatotoxic i.e. it damages liver. In some rare studies, adverse effects of this medicine have been noticed. Mesulid has rather tolerable common side effects. Usually, patients suffer from mild complaints such as nausea, diarrhea, heartburn or abdominal cramps. But they are only mild and more than often no treatment is required.
