In 1992, GlaxoSmithKline launched a drug called Paroxetine for the treatment of depression. This drug is sold under many brand names, including Seroxat. Seroxat is one of the most prescribed medicines in the world, and since 2006 it has become the fifth most prescribed anti-depressant, with approximately 20 million customers. Its effectiveness has been proved by various clinical tests conducted by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Seroxat is generally used for the treatment of depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD, a chronic anxiety disorder), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD, an anxiety disorder which usually develops after exposure to a horrific incident), panic attacks, general anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder and many other emotional disorders. The human brain contains chemical compounds, called neurotransmitters, which transmit various signals to the brain. Serotonin is one such neurotransmitter, which affects mood. Seroxat works by controlling the serotonin re-absorption in such a way so as to increase the serotonin levels in the brain. Depression is caused by a decrease in the serotonin produced by the nerve cells, and an increase in the serotonin levels relieves depression and relaxes a person’s mood.

Primarily, it was used for the treatment of episodes of depression, later it proved to be effective for prolonged treatment of emotional disorders. It takes about two to four weeks for Seroxat to show its effects as a permanent relief from anxiety disorders. Medication should be continued for at least a month, even if the effects don’t seem to be apparent, as it may take some time for the medicine to show its effects (depending on the patient and their condition).

Seroxat belongs to a class of drugs called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). It is one of the strongest and most selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Some studies have shown that Seroxat can also be used for the treatment of premature ejaculation. Clinical tests show that intra-vaginal ejaculation latency time (IELT) increases considerably more using Seroxat than other Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors. Moreover, there is also considerable evidence that Seroxat can be used for the cure of compulsive gambling (an uncontrollable desire to gamble) and hot flashes (feeling of intense heat with increased heart beat and rise in body temperature).

The effective dosage for Seroxat ranges from 20mg to 40mg per day. However excessive use should be avoided. Possible side effects include decreased appetite, nausea, headache, increased sweating, sleepiness or insomnia, tremor, dizziness and constipation. However, most of these side effects are pertinent to the first few weeks of use of this medicine i.e. when the body is adjusting to the medication. Some studies have also shown that it can also cause withdrawal syndrome. Doctor’s advice should be sought before using Seroxat.
